# 1. University of Bologna (Università di Bologna)


In the Middle Ages, the peculiarity of the University of Bologna was that the students themselves had power: they paid teachers for their work, hired professors, fired them and even fined them. It is known that until the 15th century, only legal sciences were taught here. Soon other faculties emerged, such as:

  • medicine;
  • philosophy;
  • theology.


Women taught and studied at the institute along with men. This was a completely new approach to education, different from other educational institutions.

# 3. University of Padua (Università degli Studi di Padova)


Description of the University of Padua (UNIPD)

  • The oldest higher education institution in Europe is considered to be the Italian University of Padua (abbreviated as UNIPD).
  • It began its activity in 1222 in the city of Padua.

Since the educational institution has an ancient history, many interesting facts have accumulated, of which the most significant ones can be highlighted:

  • In the 15th-18th centuries, the institution was considered the main educational center of the entire Venetian Republic.
  • In 1545, a botanical garden was created, which is considered the oldest in Europe.
  • Galileo Galilei, being a teacher at the Faculty of Astronomy, made a telescope with 3-fold magnification. This was his first invention, which gave rise to the study of Jupiter's satellites.
  • In 1595, Girolamo Fabricius (a teacher at the Faculty of Medicine) opened an anatomical theater. It was the first in all of Europe.
  • For the first time in the world, a woman named Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia received a PhD degree. This event took place in 1678.
  • The educational institution itself resembles a fortress with towers, numerous passages and stairs.

UNIPD is in fifth place in the ranking of its country. Among international universities, it occupies the 227th position. The following areas are popular:

# 4. University of Rome "La Sapienza" (Università di Roma "La Sapienza")


Sapienza (L'Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza), or Uniroma1 for short, is an Italian state university in Rome. It is one of the oldest universities in the world: its history begins in 1303, when Pope Boniface VIII ordered the creation of the church educational institution Studio Urbis. Its task was to train theologians and specialists for the papal administration. In 1660, Studio Urbis was moved to a new building and was named Sapienza (translated from Latin as "wisdom"). Since 1870, the university has ceased to be a papal university and has developed as a secular educational institution.


Sapienza is the largest university in Europe: 117,000 students study there. Following the administrative reform of 2010, the university has 11 faculties, 60 departments, one school of astrophysics, 21 museums and 50 libraries. In all international rankings among Italian universities, Sapienza occupies leading positions, and in the profile of "Classical Studies" and "Ancient History" according to the QS World University Rankings, it ranks first in the world, ahead of Oxford in England. Sapienza is also among the 100 best universities in the world.
