About the Royal Holloway, University of London
The history of Royal Holloway began in the mid-nineteenth century, during the era of the struggle for educational reforms. In 1849, Elizabeth Jesser Reid founded Bedford College - the first higher education institution for women in the UK. Among its first students were writer George Eliot and the first female doctor Elizabeth Blackwell. In 1886, Thomas and Jane Holloway founded Royal Holloway College in Surrey, aiming to expand educational opportunities for women. The college was officially opened by Queen Victoria, who bestowed upon it the title "Royal." In 1900, both colleges became part of the University of London, and in 1985 they merged to form the modern Royal Holloway, inheriting the motto "Esse quam videri" ("To be, rather than to seem").
