About the University of California, Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is the flagship and oldest campus of the University of California system, founded in 1868 as a result of the merger of a private college and a state educational institution. It is one of the most prestigious public research universities in the world. The university reached maturity in the early 20th century, and in the 1930s under the leadership of President Robert Sproul, it became a major world-class scientific center. Throughout its history, Berkeley has been a place of revolutionary discoveries: the cyclotron was invented here, 16 chemical elements were discovered (including plutonium, berkelium, californium), the antiproton was researched, the foundations of laser technology and the BSD operating system were laid. University scientists played a key role in the Manhattan Project. To this day, 117 Nobel Prize laureates are in some way connected to Berkeley. The university is also known as a center of student activism, most prominently demonstrated in the Free Speech Movement of 1964. Berkeley's educational philosophy is based on a combination of deep fundamental knowledge, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary research. The university encourages academic freedom and involves students in real scientific projects from their first year. Many academic programs have a practical orientation, especially in the fields of engineering, computer science, and business. Berkeley has had a huge influence on global science, economy, and culture. The economic impact of its activities far exceeds state funding. University graduates have founded companies such as Apple, Intel, Tesla, and have also received numerous prestigious awards, including 32 Nobel Prizes and 223 Olympic medals. The main goals of the university are to provide affordable quality education, develop leadership qualities in students, conduct groundbreaking research for the benefit of society, and prepare professionals capable of solving global problems.
