About the University of Helsinki

Founded in 1640 in the city of Turku and relocated to Helsinki in 1828, the University of Helsinki is the oldest and largest university in Finland. It is a member of the prestigious League of European Research Universities (LERU) and consistently ranks among the top 100 universities in the world. The university has played a key role in shaping Finnish society, education, and scientific thought. Among its distinguished alumni are four presidents of Finland, Nobel Prize laureates (such as chemist Artturi Ilmari Virtanen), and the creator of the Linux operating system Linus Torvalds. The educational philosophy of the university is based on a close connection between teaching and scientific research. Students are involved in research activities from the very beginning of their studies. A unique practice is the wide freedom to create individual study plans, including the opportunity to take courses from different faculties. The university actively develops digital teaching methods and open scientific resources. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, solving complex problems, and an interdisciplinary approach. The main goals of the University of Helsinki are the production of new knowledge, solving global issues (such as climate change and public health), and educating responsible citizens. It has a significant influence on the educational system of Finland and is the country's main academic center, collaborating with leading universities and research centers around the world.
