About the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT MARY (USM)
The University of Saint Mary is a private Catholic applied liberal arts university founded in 1923 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. The Sisters arrived in Leavenworth in 1858, and the university originally opened as Saint Mary Junior College. The 200-acre campus sits on a bluff about 25–30 miles from Kansas City; there is also a branch campus in Overland Park (Johnson County) and extensive online programs. Total enrollment is about 1,460 (about 1,025 undergraduate and 435 graduate and doctoral), and the student-faculty ratio is 11:1. Its profile is nursing and health care, education, business and psychology. Doctoral programs in education and occupational therapy launched in 2020; there are three doctoral programs in all, including the Doctor of Physical Therapy. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, with nursing accredited by CCNE and business programs by IACBE.
