About the University of Toronto

The University of Toronto was founded in 1827 under the name King's College and is the oldest university in the province of Ontario and one of the leading research universities in the world. Located in the most cosmopolitan city in Canada, the university consists of three campuses: St. George (historical, in downtown Toronto), Scarborough, and Mississauga. U of T has a unique collegiate system, where undergraduate students belong to one of seven small colleges, providing a sense of community and support. The university is proud of its outstanding achievements: it is here that insulin, stem cells, and the first electronic pacemaker were discovered. Among its alumni and faculty are 5 Canadian Prime Ministers and 10 Nobel Laureates. The educational philosophy of U of T is based on the principles of academic excellence, innovative research, and preparing students for leadership in a global context. The uniqueness of the university lies in the combination of the scale of a large research center with an individualized approach through the college system. Practices include actively involving students in research from the first year (research opportunity programs), project-based learning, and a strong emphasis on developing critical thinking and communication skills. The multicultural environment of the university reflects the diversity of Toronto itself. The University of Toronto has a huge impact on Canada and the world. It is the country's largest research institution, advancing science in the fields of medicine, artificial intelligence, social sciences, and humanities. Its reputation as the top university in Canada and one of the top 20 in the world attracts talented students and scholars from around the globe. U of T makes a key contribution to the economy and cultural life of the city and country. The institution's main goals are to create and disseminate knowledge, educate responsible citizens and leaders, and address the most pressing issues facing humanity through research.
