Can You Study in the USA Without IELTS? An Overview of Alternative Options

12.05.2026 11:00

A strong command of English is a must for studying abroad. However, IELTS is not the only way to prove your language skills. Many universities accept alternative tests, and in some cases, students may even be fully exempt from language testing.

So, let’s break down how you can study in the USA without IELTS.

Can You Get Into a U.S. University Without IELTS?

Short answer — yes, you can.

There is no nationwide requirement in the United States that forces international students to take IELTS specifically. Each university sets its own English language requirements and decides which tests it accepts.

For example, the University of California, Berkeley lists the following options on its official website:

  • Exams: TOEFL, Duolingo, IELTS Academic, DAAD, TEM-4 or TEM-8, Cambridge
  • Internal Zoom interview (English Screening)
  • Test waiver (for applicants who completed previous education in English)

Main Ways to Study Without Taking IELTS

Here are the key strategies international students use:

  • Alternative tests — such as Duolingo, TOEFL, Cambridge English, PTE, iTEP
  • Internal university tests or interviews
  • Conditional admission
  • MOI certificate (Medium of Instruction), proving studies were completed in English
  • Pathway preparation programs

Let’s take a closer look at each option.

Alternative Tests

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) — a classic exam accepted by virtually all U.S. universities. It is developed by the American organization Educational Testing Service, which is why it is considered the most “native” test for the U.S. education system. Required scores typically range from 70 to 100+, depending on the program and university level.

Duolingo English Test (DET) — a rapidly growing alternative in recent years. Today, more than 3,000 universities in the U.S. accept it. The biggest advantage is convenience: you can take the test online from home, it lasts about an hour, and results arrive quickly (usually within 48 hours). Required scores typically range from 105 to 130, depending on the institution.

Cambridge English Qualifications — international English exams from the University of Cambridge, accepted by some U.S. universities (mainly C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency levels). Unlike IELTS, which is valid for two years, Cambridge certificates do not expire. In the U.S., they are used less frequently and are mainly required for academically strong programs.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) — a computer-based alternative to IELTS and TOEFL, delivered by Pearson. The test is fully automated: all sections, including Speaking and Writing, are scored by algorithms, removing human bias. Results are typically available within one to two days.

iTEP (International Test of English Proficiency) — a less widely known exam, more commonly used for pathway or foundation programs. It was developed by Boston Educational Services and is designed to quickly assess academic English proficiency.

PTE Academic and iTEP are less common overall, but they are still accepted by a number of universities and preparatory programs.

Important: Always check the official website of your chosen university for the exact list of accepted English language tests.

Internal Tests and Online Interviews

A less obvious but still valid option is an internal English assessment conducted by the university itself.

Some universities allow applicants to take an online interview or their own placement test instead of submitting standardized exam scores. This may include a Zoom conversation, a written assignment, or a mixed format.

This option is especially useful for students who already have strong spoken English but do not yet hold an official certificate.

Conditional admission

Some universities offer a special pathway called Conditional Admissions Programme (CAP).

In this case, the university admits a student without IELTS (or another test), on the condition that they complete a language preparation program before starting their degree studies. In practice, the student is already accepted but begins their academic journey by improving their English first.

After completing the language program, there is no need to reapply — students automatically progress into their main degree program.

MOI Certificate (Medium of Instruction)

MOI is a document confirming that your previous education was conducted in English.

For example, if a student studied at a school or college where all subjects were taught entirely in English, U.S. universities may waive the English language test requirement.

However, there is no universal rule here: some universities accept MOI, others do not, and some may request additional proof (for example, an interview). Always check the specific requirements of your chosen university.

Pathway Program

A Pathway program is a preparatory program offered by universities, usually lasting one year, and it includes:

  • English language study
  • Academic courses in the chosen major
  • Adaptation to the U.S. education system

The main difference between Pathway programs and standard language courses is that Pathway is built directly into the admissions process. After completion, students move on to their main degree program without reapplying.

In many cases, students can enroll in a Pathway program without IELTS, making it one of the most accessible ways to start studying in the U.S.

Do You Need IELTS for a U.S. Visa?

No, IELTS is not required to obtain an F-1 student visa.

The key document is the Form I-20, which is issued by the university after admission. It confirms that the student has been accepted into a program and meets all requirements, including language proficiency.

Therefore, if a university admits you without IELTS, it does not affect your visa application in any way.
