About the York College of Pennsylvania
York College of Pennsylvania is a private, non-profit college that traces its roots to the York County Academy, set up in the 1770s and chartered by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1787. The academy merged with York Collegiate Institute in 1929, was a two-year college from 1941, and gained four-year status in 1968. The campus covers about 190 acres in York County, about 30 miles from Harrisburg. Total enrollment is about 3,300–4,000 students (including more than 400 master's and doctoral students), and the student-faculty ratio is about 15:1. The college offers more than 70 baccalaureate majors (50–58 by other counts) in professional programs, sciences and humanities, plus master's programs and a doctoral program in nursing practice. Its strengths include nursing, business (the Graham School of Business), engineering (ABET-accredited), education, sport management and criminal justice. US News lists it among the Best Regional Universities in the North, including for nursing and engineering, and it is recognized as Military Friendly. A distinctive feature is the Center for Professional Excellence, which runs an annual national poll on the characteristics of professionalism. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (nursing by CCNE, music by NASM). Teams compete in NCAA Division III (MAC Commonwealth Conference).
